Rewards credit cards are typically meant for those who have good incomes, and who can use their credit card for everyday purchases and pay off the balance in full each month.

That's because rewards cards usually have high interest rates and often even charge an annual fee. Ultimately, a rewards credit card can be advantageous if used wisely. It can provide financial perks and additional benefits, such as travel insurance or purchase protection.

However, it's essential to evaluate your financial habits and goals before committing to a rewards card to ensure it aligns with your needs and helps you achieve your objectives without risking financial instability. An air miles or airline credit card is a reward credit card for travel.

Instead of earning points, a cashback credit card allows you to earn back a percentage of the money you spend. The money you earn will be put back into your account either monthly or annually. Unless you pay off the credit card amount each month, the cost of interest might outweigh the rewards.

Supermarket credit cards have been a staple of the rewards credit card market. These cards offer more points when spent in the retailer's own shops, but you can also earn points by spending at other retailers.

Store cards are a type of credit card that are issued by a retailer and can only be used to make purchases in that particular store.

More recently, however, a number of store cards have disappeared from the market. This has predominantly been a result of a declining high street, shops going out of business and many being taken over by e-retailers.

The card you choose will depend on your needs and spending habits. Some cards offer you the chance to earn points that you can spend with a specific retailer.

Others provide vouchers that you can spend across a variety of retailers. For example, some reward cards give you the chance to collect Nectar points, which can be put towards anything from restaurant bills to hotels.

Reward cards are often competitive in other areas, allowing you to use them for different purposes. Some of these interest-free periods can be as long as on other types of credit card. What makes the best reward credit card for you will vary depending on what rewards you'll use most.

Think about how much you will use a reward credit card, where you will use it, and what benefits or rewards would be most valuable for you. If you do most of your shopping with a particular retailer it might be a good idea to get a reward card from that retailer if it offers one.

You can earn points that you'll be able to spend in its shops. But if you do your shopping in a number of supermarkets or retailers, you might not be getting the best deal. Even with a really attractive points deal, you'll be tied to shopping in one place when it comes to spending your rewards.

Premium cards are elite reward cards that offer exclusive rewards, like access to airport lounges or a concierge service, in exchange for a fee. There is usually a minimum income level that you have to meet in order to be approved for a premium reward card.

There is also often a minimum monthly or annual spend to qualify for the rewards. Some top-end reward credit cards also charge an annual fee, so you need to weigh up the benefits and costs. Find out more about premium cards.

Reward cards can offer a little extra back as a perk for spending on them - just make sure you clear the balance each month. One of the most common types of reward credit card is one designed for travel.

These let you build up virtual air miles that you can then exchange for free flights you usually still pay taxes and charges or upgrades on plane tickets.

Other common travel perks include free airport lounge access and discounts from travel firms. As well as loyalty points and air miles, some credit cards also pay you a percentage of your purchases back as cash.

Think of it as a permanent sale where anything you buy with the card has an extra percent or two off. The money is generally returned to you as a credit on your account once a year. An air miles credit card is designed to reward your spending by giving you airline points. You can then exchange the points for discounts on the price of your flights or upgrades.

Our editors have picked out our top card for getting airmiles right now. No fee and you get 5, Avios if you spend £1, in the first three months and an upgrade voucher if you spend £20, in the first 12 months. Representative example: The standard interest rate on purchases is variable , so if you borrow £1, the Representative APR will be These cards offer the most points for spending in 'home' shops - so the supermarket itself as well as linked retailers, for example the Sainsbury's card will also boost your points for purchases at Argos.

As well as using these cards for your groceries, you can also use them to collect rewards, in the form of Nectar or Clubcard points, on other purchases you make on the card at other retailers.

The most straightforward type of rewards card is a cashback credit card. Cashback cards give you back a percentage of what you spend , which might be added to your account once a year or more frequently. Firstly, these cards often come with an introductory bonus , where you earn more cashback in the first few months after you get them.

They also often work on a tiered basis, where how much cashback you get depends on how much you spend on the card. Finally, watch out for annual fees.

You could end up paying a hefty charge on the card which could outweigh any benefit you get from using it. Approach cards charging fees with caution.

The secret to getting the best out of a rewards card is to make sure you know what's on offer. For example, lots of cards come with introductory bonuses , where the points ramp up if you spend a certain amount, in a certain store, within a certain time.

Miss out on that target and you could see how much you get back seriously affected. Bonuses aside, many cards pay far more for spending in certain shops - with supermarket cards often increasing rewards for spending in store.

If you have the option to pay in more than one way, getting this right can also boost your rewards. But, more importantly, never spend more than you can afford to repay that month in the hunt for reward points. Doing that is a losing game, with a few more points here and there almost never making up for missed payments, interest charges and the damage to a credit score that can result from spending more than you can afford to repay.

Set up a direct debit to pay the full card balance off each month on day one of having your card to stay safe.

Every time you pay with your cashback credit card, you earn a percentage of what you spent on the purchase. This is usually either paid as a credit on your bill, or paid into a nominated account.

Reward credit cards are similar but pay you in points that can normally be converted into vouchers to spend with a particular retailer. Some deals come with introductory rates that may be capped and followed by an ongoing rate, while others pay a flat unlimited rate for as long as you have the card.

The trick with a cashback or reward credit card is to use it as a debit card and load all of your everyday spending onto it to rack up the benefits.

However, you should make sure you can pay off the balance in full every month, otherwise, the interest you're charged will quickly outweigh any rewards you earn.

Many reward and cashback cards also come with an annual fee; you'll need to factor in whether or not paying this is worth it compared what you might make back. With a cashback or reward credit card, there are a few things to bear in mind to make sure you use them effectively.

We've set out the golden rules below. Cashback and reward credit cards are a rewarding tool if you only use them to spend money you actually have like you would with a debit card.

It's important to make sure you pay off the balance of your cashback credit card in full every month otherwise the interest could outweigh the rewards. With this in mind, we recommend you set up a direct debit to clear your balance each month so you don't forget.

To get the most out of your cashback or reward credit card you should try to use it as much as possible. The best deals reward you every time you make a purchase, so it makes sense to use them instead of cash or debit cards whenever you can.

Have a cashback or reward credit card query? A cashback credit card is a great tool to reward yourself on your everyday spending.

Getting one isn't about getting into debt, just about being savvy with your shopping and being rewarded without spending more than you normally would. Rewards on a credit card such as cashback or points aren't subject to tax. That's because points and cashback are seen as a rebate on money you've spent rather than income.

You can find further details in the HMRC guidance and in Example 3. A cashback credit card works best when you are using it to replace your debit card for everyday spending. You'd be better off looking for the best interest-free credit cards if you want to spread the cost of a purchase.

Cashback and reward credit cards come with the same Section 75 protection as other credit cards. So if you make a purchase worth between £ and £30, on a cashback credit card the card issuer is equally liable with the retailer if something goes wrong.

The cashback you earn by using your cashback credit card is usually paid back in the form of a credit on your bill. But some providers will deposit what you earn in your bank account. Cashback is usually paid monthly, quarterly or annually depending on your provider.

Some cards may also require a minimum yearly spend before you can qualify for cashback. Make sure you check the terms of the deal before signing up. Cashback does not count towards your minimum monthly credit card repayment, so don't rely on this to help you pay your bill.

Cashback is only paid on what you spend, so if you buy something and return it your cashback balance will be adjusted to reflect this. No cashback will be earned on interest, fees, balance transfers, cash advances or loading prepaid cards. Cashback credit cards let you earn money back on your everyday spending, which you can then use on other purchases.

However, if you tend to be loyal to a particular shop you could be better offer with a reward credit card that offers points which can be turned into vouchers to spend there. You will need to have a decent credit rating to get a cashback credit card so you should check your report to see if it can be improved.

Use our guide credit reports: all you need to know for the lowdown. However, those with a poor credit history may also be able to benefit from credit builder cards that offer cashback.
