This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money. Moving an existing debt to a credit card usually incurs a charge called a balance transfer fee.

Paying it might feel like a penalty, but it could be your ticket to a faster and cheaper debt payoff. A balance transfer fee is the cost you pay to transfer a debt to a credit card.

The credit card issuer assesses this fee in exchange for taking on your debt. The balance transfer fee is added to the overall balance on the card receiving the transfer. Balance transfer fees tend to increase with the age of the account, incentivizing you to make a transfer within the first few months of opening the credit card.

The best balance transfer credit cards often require at least good credit to qualify, meaning a FICO score of and above. Read our tips. No, but those cards that waive balance transfer fees are rare. The fee is charged by the company that issues the credit card you transfer the debt to.

A balance transfer can help you take advantage of lower interest rates — a move that can save you money on interest charges. This can be a great tool to pay down debt. Keep reading to learn about the potential costs of a balance transfer, as well as some different options you may have.

Timing can play a big part in how much you pay to transfer a balance. But there are balance transfer credit cards that waive the balance transfer fee if you make the transfer within a certain time frame.

The cost of a balance transfer fee all depends on the terms set by your credit card company and the amount of debt you transfer. The only sure way to avoid balance transfer fees is to see if any balance transfer cards are available that have waived the fee entirely.

You might also be able to find cards with intro balance transfer fee offers. Or even better, look for one with none at all, at least during the introductory period. A balance transfer fee is a one-time fee you pay when you transfer a balance from one credit card to another, usually with a lower interest rate.

Fortunately, the balance transfer fee is only charged when you make the transaction; you don't have to worry about any ongoing fees. Because the balance transfer fee is added to your balance at the time of the transfer, you can pay it over time as you pay off the balance you've transferred.

Only two credit cards in our findings set a maximum balance transfer fee. Weighing the balance transfer fee against any other promotional terms can help you decide whether to accept a credit card offer and transfer your balance to the new card.

You can find the amount of the balance transfer fee in the credit card disclosure in the section with other credit card fees. There is no cap on the amount of the balance transfer fee for the vast majority of credit cards that offer balance transfers, so your fee could be hundreds of dollars if you're transferring a big balance.

Typically, the goal of transferring a balance is to save money on interest, particularly if you're applying for a balance transfer with a promotional APR.

Replacing the interest with a high balance transfer fee may not allow you to save much money. If the balance transfer fee is higher than the amount of interest you would have paid on the current credit card, transferring the balance isn't worth it.

You can use a credit card payoff calculator to estimate the amount of interest you'll pay under your current credit card terms. The best way to offset the cost of the balance transfer fee is to pay off the new balance before the promotional period ends.

Otherwise, the remaining balance accrues interest at the regular rate. Some credit cards offer an introductory balance transfer rate for new cardholders who transfer a balance within the first few months of opening an account. Offers vary by credit card, so shopping around is key to finding the best deals.

If you find an offer like this, you can minimize the fee you're charged by making your transfer soon after opening the account. You could try to negotiate a lower fee, but do it before you move the balance.

Section Breadcrumbs IHCDA Homebuyers Current: Homeownership Programs Homeownership Programs. Next Home Down Payment Assistance DPA of 2. Top FAQs. I Want To Eligibility is determined by your household income and credit history, and it varies by state and program.

Most assistance comes in the form of first-time home buyer grants and loans offered at the state and local levels. Funds may even be available from the private sector and nonprofits where you live. The most valuable form of down payment assistance is the grant. An important word of warning here: Some programs that are labeled grants by the organization doing the funding may actually create a second lien on your home.

Often, lenders will forgive the loan after 5 years, but they do have the option of making the forgiveness period as long as 15 or 20 years.

You might also qualify for a second mortgage with a deferred payment. Your lender or another organization might offer you the opportunity to take out a second mortgage loan at the same time your first mortgage is finalized.

You can use the funds from this loan to cover your down payment. The goal is to get a low interest rate on these loans.

Some lenders or organizations might even offer such loans with no interest at all. Matched savings programs — otherwise known as individual development accounts — are another way for homeowners to get help on their down payment. With these home buyer programs, prospective home buyers deposit money into an account with a bank, government agency or community organization.

That institution agrees to match however much the buyers deposit. Buyers can then use the total amount of funds to help cover their down payments. The amount of time it takes to get down payment assistance depends on the program and the type of assistance.

Each state offers its own programs, as do cities and organizations. These programs move at different speeds depending on their size and the demand for them. The assistance program must work with your lender to secure the loan and the down payment funds.

This can add time to the closing process, depending on how quickly the down payment assistance program acts. Many programs also consider your debt-to-income ratio DTI.

Start by researching the programs available in your area, if any. HUD has a list of local home buying programs by state.

Check with your city and county to see if they offer any grants or loan programs. Search their websites for information on how to apply.

Make sure your mortgage lender works with the program. For an FHA loan , you must put up some of your own money, but most down payment programs will work with FHA loans.

That way, you know how much house you can afford before saving for a down payment and closing on a property. However, if you still need help coming up with the money, the down payment assistance programs offered by community organizations, government agencies and local lenders could help you clear this financial hurdle.

Add a co-signer or co-borrower: A co-signer or co-borrower can help your chances of qualifying or getting a good rate. A co-borrower has equal access to the funds, while a co-signer does not. Add collateral: Some lenders offer secured personal loans and consider the item used as collateral usually a bank account or vehicle when assessing an application.

Adding collateral can improve your chances of qualifying, but the lender can take the collateral if you miss too many payments. Add up income streams: Your monthly income is another important factor on an application. Most lenders want to see that you have enough to cover regular expenses, make the new loan payment and have a little leftover.

Many lenders consider things like Social Security, alimony or child support as part of your income. Online lenders usually let you check your rate before applying and offer a fast application process.

But predatory lenders will try to exploit your emergency. Many banks prefer borrowers with good or excellent credit scores or higher , but there are some exceptions.

If you take out a personal loan, funds are generally sent to you very quickly — as soon as the same day, or a couple business days. Some personal loans are secured, and they require you to put up collateral. Collateral is something of value, such as cash savings, an automobile, or even a house, which is used to guarantee the loan.

If you are unable to make payments in the future, ownership of the collateral may pass from you to the lender. Getting a personal loan is a quick and easy process compared to other types of loans like mortgages.

The lender will run a hard credit check and you may be required to submit some documentation such as a paystub. If your loan is approved, the lender will typically wire the funds directly to your bank account.

All in all, the process can be completed in anywhere from the same day to a few business days, depending on the lender. A fixed rate loan has in interest rate that will not change over time, meaning your monthly payment will be the same throughout your repayment term.

A variable rate loan, on the other hand, has an interest rate that will fluctuate with market rates. If market rates go down, your rate and payment will go down, but if market rates go up, so will your rate and payment. Variable rates tend to be a little bit lower than fixed rates, at least to start.

They can also be attractive when market rates are at historic highs and you expect rates to decline. For starters, you should always check multiple lenders to make sure you get the best deal on a loan.

Some lenders may charge fees such as origination fees or late fees — consider these in addition to factors like interest rate when deciding to take out a loan.

Checking rates on Purefy has no impact on your credit. A soft pull has no impact on your credit and will not affect your credit score. If you decide to submit a full application with a lender, you will need to consent to a hard credit pull, which may result in a temporary reduction of your credit score.

If you're able to find a better rate with another lender, you can return the loan without paying anything in penalties or interest. Each lender was ranked using a meticulous point system, focusing on four main categories :. Emergency personal loans can be a great alternative for those who are tight on cash and need to cover an urgent expense.

This is especially true if your only other options are credit cards or payday loans, as both of these products tend to have higher interest rates than personal loans.

However, emergency loans should only be used for needs, not wants, and only if you can afford to repay them — you could put yourself in a risky financial position if you default on your loan. An emergency loan is a type of personal loan.

It functions identically to any other personal loan except that it's branded for emergencies. Typically the personal loans branded as emergency loans have fast turnarounds — sometimes as soon as one business day. Don't simply rely on loans branded as emergency loans.

If you need to take out a personal loan for an emergency , your best bet is to find a lender that advertises fast approval and fast funding for a loan amount that suits your needs. Because emergency loans don't typically have rules about what you need to use them for, you could get a loan for situations like the following:.

While you can use an emergency loan for nearly anything, make sure that you only borrow as much as you need and what you can repay. Once you've gotten quotes from a few lenders, you'll send in your application to the one with the best interest rate and terms.

You'll likely need to provide identity and income verification during this stage of the application process. Once you're approved, funds can be sent directly to your bank account.

There are many ways to get funds in an emergency. Some of the most common types of emergency loans include the following.

Personal loans are a good option for emergencies because they can be disbursed quickly, sometimes within the same day of approval. They can also be less expensive to use than credit cards — while many credit cards have interest rates upwards of 20 percent, the average personal loan interest rate hovers above Home equity loans and home equity lines of credit HELOCs are less common for emergency uses since they're typically slower to disburse funds.

However, they will usually offer the lowest rates since they're secured by your home. Your credit card company may extend you a short-term loan in the form of a cash advance. This type of loan is one of the fastest ways to access money, but the interest rates and fees can be higher than they are for standard purchases with your card.

Payday loans are short-term loans that don't require a credit check and will typically need to be repaid with your next paycheck. Payday loans are extremely risky and not recommended if you can avoid them. They charge triple-digit interest rates and high fees, and failing to make payments could send you deeper into debt.

Just like payday loans, title loans are a type of short-term loan that is typically repaid within 15 to 30 days after getting the funds. These loans typically carry high interest rates and fees, and use your car as collateral. That means that the lender could seize your vehicle if you default on your loan.

You can get an emergency loan from any lender that provides personal loans. This includes banks, credit unions and online lenders. However, some of these are better options than others. If your credit score is holding you back from qualifying for an emergency loan, there are still some alternatives.

Unemployment, an urgent medical procedure, emergency repairs and sudden death or disability can easily put your finances under pressure. While you can't completely prepare for unexpected hardship, you can at least build yourself a buffer.

An emergency fund can help you better recover from unplanned expenses in the future. Putting aside even a little bit of money at a time into a dedicated savings account can help you prepare for any future setbacks.

When it comes to borrowing, a quick decision is often not the best decision. You may forego shopping around for the best rates if you need cash due to an emergency. Some inherent dangers of emergency loans include:.

If you need an emergency loan, be cautious of lenders that might be out to scam you or take advantage of your difficult time. Pay attention to:. You should avoid any emergency loan that affects your ability to earn money or could result in losing an asset like a car or a home.

Before you consider a payday loan, title loan or home equity loan or HELOC, consider the substantial financial risks. Taking out a loan always causes your credit score to temporarily drop by a few points, but as long as you make your monthly payments on time, your credit score will not be permanently damaged.

Making on time payments can actually improve your credit score over time.

Implementing product-led growth strategies can significantly reduce acquisition costs. While you still need to invest in marketing to attract user attention, they require far less hand-holding once they sign up for the product.

For example, in-app onboarding and self-service support enable them to explore the product and experience its value without assistance from the customer success or support teams.

Many of them will be happy to make even big purchases by credit card without even talking to Sales. Satisfied customers will also help you promote your product and acquire new users through word-of-mouth WOM marketing and referral schemes, which reduces marketing costs.

As mentioned, the CAC payback metric can reveal how effective each acquisition channel is. Once you know which channel performs best, simply focus most of your efforts on that particular channel.

For example, in its early days, Userpilot tried a number of different marketing strategies. Instead, look for ways to gradually improve the performance of the other channels. For instance, even if face-to-face sales have the best CAC payback, developing self-service channels may help you scale up the business in the long run.

Tweaking your pricing is an obvious way to improve your CAC payback period. Increasing prices can potentially generate more revenue but also could increase the CAC because customers may perceive your product as less competitive. Lowering prices, on the other hand, could reduce the CAC costs significantly enough that it will make up for the loss in revenue.

However, if the price is low or you decide to offer a free plan , your product may attract lots of unqualified sign-ups who have no intention of subscribing to the paid plan and who will still put a strain on your customer support teams. Apart from prices, you can also experiment with payment frequency monthly vs.

annual subscription or usage-based pricing. If customers churn before you recoup the cost of acquiring and supporting them, your CAC payback figures will suffer. What retention strategies can you implement to reduce the churn rate?

Start by creating frictionless sign-up flows so that users can get inside the product as soon as possible. This will reduce the time to value — and risk of churning. To further reduce the time users need to experience the Aha!

moment , invest in personalized onboarding experiences that help users discover relevant features. Try checklists and interactive walkthroughs to start with.

As users are exploring the product, track their progress and offer contextual in-app support to remove friction and drive engagement. Use in-app surveys to collect feedback to gain a better understanding of user needs and pain points.

And act on the insights! In-app messages can also help you maximize account expansion opportunities and further reduce CAC payback.

For those who can pay more than the minimum, try the snowball or avalanche methods to create a more long-term plan. And if you have good or excellent credit and One of the most effective ways to shorten the payback period and improve ROI is by streamlining operational processes. A balance transfer card allows you to transfer debt from other credit cards — usually credit cards from other companies only — or use a balance transfer check to combine other forms of debt at a 0 percent interest rate.

This low promotional rate period typically lasts from 12 to 21 months, and a good to excellent credit score is needed for approval. Additionally, most cards will charge you a balance transfer fee on the total amount you transfer, typically from 2 to 5 percent.

Home equity loans and HELOCs allow you to borrow against the equity in your home. While a home equity loan has fixed monthly payments at a fixed interest rate, a HELOC works like a credit card and has a variable interest rate.

Also, both require that you have a certain amount of equity in your home. Compared with debt consolidation loans, home equity loans and HELOCs often have longer repayment periods, larger loan amounts and lower interest rates.

You can withdraw the difference between the two balances and use it to improve your home or consolidate debt. You can negotiate with the debtor yourself or pay a fee to a debt relief company or lawyer to negotiate on your behalf. But even if you, a lawyer or a company successfully negotiates a settlement, your credit score may take a hit.

Debt management plans are offered by credit counseling agencies. They involve working closely with a counselor, who will evaluate your debt and the best approach to tackle it. The agency or company should be transparent about its services. Ensure you understand the cost structure and that there are no hidden fees. This is the case for both debt consolidation and debt settlement companies.

Check customer reviews and ratings from reliable sources like the Better Business Bureau BBB and independent review websites. Positive feedback from previous clients can be a good sign.

A reputable agency should provide financial education and ongoing support to help you manage your finances better and avoid future debt problems. Be sure to conduct due diligence, ask questions, and carefully review all terms and agreements before deciding.

His work has received multiple honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press and the Louisiana Press Association.

He avoids debt when he can and pays it off quickly when he can't, and he's only too happy to suggest how you might do the same. Debt Consolidation vs Debt Settlement. Updated: November 15, George Morris. What Is Debt Consolidation?

The four common ways to approach this are: Debt management : A nonprofit credit counseling agency works with your credit card companies to reduce the interest rate charged and arrive at an affordable monthly payment that eliminates the debt in years.

If you have trouble qualifying, you will need to look into debt consolidation options for bad credit. Personal loans: Banks, credit unions, and online debt consolidation lending companies offer personal loans at fixed rates lower than credit cards.

No. Debt consolidation involves rolling up multiple debts into a single line of credit, such as a personal loan or balance transfer credit card Debt Settlement can reduce what you owe. Student loan scams on the rise: How to protect yourself. Beginning April , borrowers whose applications were rejected for PSLF in the past can request a reconsideration online at studentaid. Anyone who thinks their application should be reconsidered can submit a request.

You'll be able to submit one or more reconsideration requests of your application to certify employment or payment determinations. You won't need to provide more documentation with your request, but you might have to provide more information following its review.

There was no deadline provided. You still must meet payment and employment requirements under the law, which includes the current waiver that would count previously ineligible payments. To figure out if you need a reconsideration of your employer, you can use the PSLF Help Tool.

The Federal Student Aid office did not indicate how long it would take to review each submission. Make sure your studentaid. gov account has the most up-to-date contact information so you can receive correspondence. More information about reconsideration of payment counts and employer qualifications are available on the federal student aid website.

However, the Supreme Court shut down this plan on June 30, , after hearing two major student loan lawsuits and deeming the proposal unlawful.

Though Biden is pursuing a student debt cancellation plan B , it's far from certain, and PSLF applicants should not expect additional relief from Biden's student debt relief plan. According to November data from the Department of Education, , borrowers qualified for forgiveness through the year-long waiver of payment rules that expired on Oct.

Most have seen their balances discharged already. Only about 12, borrowers had seen their discharges processed through the traditional PSLF process as of Oct.

Have the correct type of loans, or consolidate. Only loans that are part of the federal direct loan program are eligible for PSLF. You can consolidate other types of federal student loans — Federal Family Education Loan loans or Perkins loans — to make them PSLF-eligible.

You can still participate in PSLF with your other federal student loans. Eligibility in the program depends less on the type of work you do and more on who your employer is.

Qualifying employers can include:. Government organizations at any level. Complete an employment certification form to confirm that your employer qualifies. Send the form to MOHELA Servicing, the contractor that currently oversees PSLF for the department. When the form is processed, your loans will be transferred to MOHELA to be serviced going forward.

You must work for your qualifying employer full time, which amounts to at least 30 hours per week. If you work part time for two qualifying employers and your time averages at least 30 hours per week, you might still be eligible.

Without the waivers, your payments must be made on the standard year plan or on one of the four income-driven repayment plans. You must make monthly loan payments. These payments must be made:. On time, meaning within 15 days of your due date.

The payments do not need to be consecutive. For example, you could make some qualifying payments, pause payments through forbearance and then resume repayment, picking up where you left off. You can also change jobs, switching between qualifying employers and non-qualifying employers. Starting July , lump-sum or early payments will also count toward the needed for forgiveness.

You can do this multiple times each year up until your annual recertification deadline. You can do this online through the Education Department, or you can mail in a paper application to the student loan servicer MOHELA.

You must be working full time for a qualifying employer when you apply. The Education Department recommends you submit the form annually and each time you switch employers. MOHELA will notify you when it receives your paperwork. You're not alone if you don't meet PSLF's strict requirements.

You also have other options:. Explore other paths to forgiveness. PSLF isn't the only federal student loan forgiveness program , although it's one of the most popular.

However, watch out for loan forgiveness scams. Stay on income-driven repayment. All four income-driven plans will forgive your remaining balance after 20 or 25 years, depending on the plan.

However, unlike with PSLF, the forgiven amount may be taxable. Consider refinancing. Student loan refinancing can save you money and help you become debt-free faster by lowering your interest rate.

However, once you refinance federal loans, they're no longer eligible for forgiveness programs or income-driven repayment.

You have other options. The official application launched on Oct. Federal Student Aid stopped taking applications on Nov. The pause on federal student loan repayments is set to end after Aug. Kevin McCarthy. First payment will be due in October. Approximately 8 million borrowers are eligible to have their debt automatically erased, according to the Department of Education.

This likely refers to borrowers enrolled in an income-driven repayment IDR plan, as borrowers must submit annual salary updates to calculate their monthly payment.

As of March , Federal Student Aid said 8. Borrowers who verified income through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA within the past two years may also qualify for automatic forgiveness. Biden's plan included extending the student loan repayment pause through Dec. However, pending litigation convinced him to move that date back once again to July 1, He is legally not allowed to extend the pause beyond that.

The administration has additionally proposed a rule that would create a new income-driven repayment IDR plan. The rule would also raise the amount of income that is considered nondiscretionary and cover borrowers' unpaid monthly interest so borrowers' balance wouldn't grow as long as they are making monthly payments.

The Department of Education expected borrowers would be able to enroll into this new plan on July 1, However, that timeline is now uncertain and the department reportedly aims to release it sometime by the end of Mark Kantrowitz, a student debt expert and author on the subject, told BestColleges there are no stipulations on how much in Pell Grants someone must have received to qualify for the total cancellation amount.

Kyra Taylor, a student loan attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, said during a panel from the Student Debt Crisis Center that it also doesn't matter when a borrower received the Pell Grant. What matters is that a borrower received a Pell Grant at any point before June 30, Not sure if you received a Pell Grant while in school?

That waiver is not set to expire until Jan. Borrowers in some states, however, may have to pay taxes on discharged loans. Canceled student debt in California may not be tax exempt. The update said borrowers who applied to consolidate their FFEL loan before this date would still qualify for debt forgiveness.

However, borrowers who submit applications on that day or after would not qualify. Approximately half of FFEL borrowers already qualify for relief because the federal government services their loan. These borrowers were eligible for the student loan payment pause.

However, due to the hold on accumulating interest, approximately 9. Those with remaining student loan debt can apply for relief. If they would have qualified for additional cancellation beyond what their remaining balance is, ED will refund the difference. Borrowers who completely paid off their loan during the pause must contact their loan servicer.

ED can then erase the debt. Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Carolina on Sept. A federal judge initially threw out the case , but the 8th U. Circuit Court of Appeals later issued a stay.

Another case brought by two borrowers wanting more loan forgiveness caused a district court in Texas to rule on Nov. Federal Student Aid stopped accepting applications the next day.

The U. Supreme Court heard these two cases against debt forgiveness on Feb. The court ultimately blocked the debt forgiveness plan in a decision on June 30, By Jessica Bryant. Jessica Bryant. Jessica Bryant is a higher education analyst and senior data reporter for BestColleges.

You can use a merchant cash advance for just about any legitimate business purpose, including: Buying inventory Renovating or expanding your premises Covering a cashflow shortage Paying taxes or vendors Advertising and marketing Hiring and training Purchasing equipment In short, if your small business or startup needs money to grow, a merchant cash advance could work for you.

Merchant cash advance examples. What are the benefits? There are many potential benefits, including: Merchant cash advances are flexible and scalable. They adapt to the growth and operating pattern of your business.

You pay back what your business can afford based on your customer card income. Pay more when business is going well, pay less if things slow down.

Because you can often obtain a merchant cash advance without collateral or a deep review of your financial statements, they are a good option for businesses with limited credit history or a lack of assets that they can pledge as security for a loan. Unlike many other forms of business funding, a merchant cash advance can often be secured quickly.

In some cases, a loan offer can be made within 24 hours of application. Repayments are taken at source. You concentrate on your business and you let the loan take care of itself.

There are no hidden fees. The cost of the loan, based on the factor rate, is set at the start. You know what you pay from the moment the loan is made. What are the downsides? Here are a few potential downsides to a merchant cash advance that you might want to consider: The cost may be higher than a standard business loan.

The fee, based on the factor rate, is set at the start of the loan. Even if your business grows stronger and more creditworthy over time, it will not reduce the fee you pay. Use a business loan calculator to help you crunch the numbers and see how much more expensive factor rates can be.

Merchant cash advances work well as a last resort to cover temporary gaps in cash flow. Alternatives to explore include:. Like a merchant cash advance, a business term loan provides a lump-sum payment upfront. But you make repayments on a fixed schedule no matter your current revenue, rather than tying repayments to your sales.

Business lines of credit can be one of the easiest types of conventional business loans to qualify for. Online lenders keep eligibility requirements loose, such as requiring a minimum credit score and as little as six months in business. A business line of credit works by setting a maximum credit limit that you can borrow from at any time.

You have fixed repayment terms once you draw funds, but your credit limit replenishes as you repay the loan. APRs can range anywhere from 14 percent to 28 percent.

It also offers 1 percent cash back on all purchases. Like merchant cash advances, invoice factoring sells your future revenue to a factoring company, except you sell outstanding invoices instead of future credit card sales.

The factoring company advances a percentage of the total invoice amount to you. It then collects payment from your clients, takes out fees and pays your business the remainder.

Invoice financing also uses outstanding invoices to provide you with a cash advance. If you need business financing without repayment strings attached, you can look into business grants , which provide a one-time payment of funds if you meet qualifications and win the grant.

Federal, state or local governments are good places to start looking for grants, but some corporations and non-profit organizations also provide them. You may need to provide plenty of documentation or even presentations to win the grant. Merchant cash advances can help when your business needs cash immediately to cover day-to-day expenses, and nearly any business with card sales can qualify even with bad credit.

But its high fees and aggressive repayments may not be ideal for businesses with persistent cash flow problems.

Competitive interest rates

Competitive interest rates

More direct pathways between financial institutions and their clients have lead to banks evolving their strategy of focusing on the numbers into one where the individual customer is the focal point.

Ultimately, by branching beyond competitive interest rates into better customer experience, banks like PNC, USAA and Chase move strongly towards increasing their customer acquisition numbers. Using a combination of trust, omnichannel marketing, and customization of products, other banks can follow in their stead and benefit financially, improving their reputation among their clients and look beyond simply interest rate numbers to retain loyal customers.

To see a selection of mortgages from across the UK market and get an idea of what interest rates are available, you can compare mortgages with Experian.

Firstly, a rise in the Bank of England rate will only affect you if you have a variable or tracker mortgage. If you know interest rates are heading higher and you already have a mortgage, you could consider overpaying while the lower interest rate lasts, so you have less to pay off after the rate goes up.

If you exceed the limit, you may get stung with an early repayment charge. Alternatively, you could try and lock in a good deal by remortgaging to a fixed rate — although if a rate rise is imminent, lenders will take this into account when making an offer.

Just remember, you may be charged an early repayment fee if you remortgage during your fixed term. Calculate how much you could save with our overpayment calculator :.

Making overpayments means you'll repay your mortgage quicker and pay less interest in total. But you should check you're able to do this and won't need to pay any early repayment charges or other fees. Note that this example assumes your interest rate will remain the same for the full term of the mortgage, which is unlikely to happen in reality.

Before you apply for a mortgage , you should make sure your finances are in the best shape possible, and check if you meet the criteria a mortgage lender may look for.

Here are our suggested steps:. To get an idea of how a lender may view you when you apply for a mortgage, check your Experian Credit Score for free. This is a number between — the higher it is, the better your chances may be of getting a mortgage at the best rates.

Taking steps to improve your credit score may improve your likelihood of being accepted for a mortgage. Being employed full-time, with a steady income for the previous two years, can help you get a better mortgage interest rate.

Mortgage lenders can be particularly strict on the self-employed and may ask for several years of income tax returns to ensure you can meet regular repayments. Generally speaking, the bigger the deposit you put down, the better your interest rate will be. This is usually because the more money you commit, the less you appear as a risk to the mortgage lender.
